Doing OK

They're bold, they're sociable, and they wear the cutest tuxedos: Adélie penguins join Bird of the Year in 2024 for the second time, after making their début a decade ago in 2014 Seabird of the Year. Although they're infrequent visitors to New Zealand's mainland, more than one-third of the global Adélie penguin population lives in New Zealand’s home in Antarctica: the Ross Sea region.

Antarctica New Zealand

Antarctica New Zealand is campaigning for the Adélie penguin in the hopes that it will bring about more awareness from the New Zealand public of how valuable they are to the Antarctic ecosystems, and how they inform us on the general health of our world climate, the impact of climate change, and the explicit link between Antarctica and New Zealand. In collaboration with Manaaki Whenua, Antarctica New Zealand has been monitoring Adélie penguin populations in the Ross Sea region since the early 1980s. The Penguin Census is one of the longest-running biological time series in Antarctica, contributing annually to a database of Adélie penguin populations in the Ross Sea region. This census aids in providing a benchmark which future population levels can be compared, facilitating the monitoring of environmental changes in the Antarctic Ocean ecosystem – both natural and anthropogenic.
