Doing OK

This is one clumsy swamp hen. Pūkeko feet are big, and they have long toes that are excellent at walking over squishy, muddy ground. When threatened, pūkeko flap their wings and show off their powerful beak. They will stand up for their young and protect the nest from hawks and other predators.

2023, plane lands in Aotearoa. This is my new country and I couldn't be more excited to see kiwi, kea, kākāpō... All the birds that New Zealand has based its personality around. A few weeks in, disappointment strikes. No kiwi, no kākāpō, no kea. Only PŪKEKO. Pūkeko is the bird that welcomed me onto the island, pūkeko is the hen that followed me around the neighbourhood. No matter where you go, pūkeko will follow.
