- In some trouble
The red knot huahou gets its name from the rich reddish breeding plumage they have during February and March. The rest of the year they remain relatively nondescript as the migrate the incredible distance between New Zealand and Russia. The New Zealand population has declined from almost 60,000 in the early 1990s to about 30,000 in the 2010s.

Vote red knot?? Why knot!! This intrepid little bird is declining in numbers and could do with a bit of spotlight. Appearing in Aotearoa New Zealand soon after an epic migration from the Arctic tundra!!
